Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an account or password to upload or view chess games?
No.
All you need is a Java-enabled web browser.

The site doesn't work correctly for me. Am I doing something wrong?
You will need a Java plugin for your web browser.
Note that Oracle intentionally disabled the system clipboard in the latest version of Java (1.6_024) which makes it impossible to paste to or from outside the applet.

This really causes problems for sites like ours, but Oracle owns the spec so they can do what they like with it.

We are working on a fix.

In the meantime, there are two work-arounds:
1) Roll back to an earlier version of Java (1.6_23 or earlier).

2) Add the line
permission java.awt.AWTPermission "accessClipboard"
to your java.policy file.

Also, you will need to allow popups on the site to share games.

How do I contact someone to report a bug, request a feature (or another reason)?
If you want to contact us about the site, send us an email at info@sharechess.org
Just please don't spam us or try to sell us anything.

Can I embed a link to the ShareChess Java viewer in my own web site?
Not yet.

Can I play chess against other people on the site?
No.
Share Chess allows you to view and annotate past chess games, not play new ones.

Can I play chess against a computer on the site?
Yes.
ShareChess.org hosts an experimental AI opponent.
It plays at medium speed and a very easy level of difficulty.
Should be good for scholastic level players.

Are you a non-profit organization?
Not officially, but we don't charge users for our services, and our minimal advertising does not cover our operating costs.

Are you any good at chess?
Not really.
ShareChess.org is a site for the "rest of us".
